Course Description:

Collagraph for Beginners or Experienced Printmakers

The freedom of collagraph relief printmaking gives many creative possibilities. If it can be inked, it can be printed. Found objects from nature, like dried fruit, leaf, and flattened street trash can combine with painterly marks from glues and gesso to create a collage plate. These plates are versatile and can be printed as a gauffrage (uninked embossing), hand-colored as a wood block, or printed as a viscosity. Bring materials that are interesting to the first class. No previous printmaking experience is necessary. There will be demonstrations as well as, individualized instruction. Limited to eight students

Sense of Place gathers works by thirty-six artists from across both sides of the Canada-USA border around the theme of place through printmaking. Ranging from traditional techniques on traditional surfaces―such as monotypes, etchings, woodcuts, lithographs, and silkscreens―to digital prints and found objects, the show maps out the broad field of contemporary printmaking. The theme is largely conceptual; while there is some landscape imagery in the show, the works focus more on how our sense of place is linked to our sense of self.

Course Description:

Intaglio/Etching for Beginners or Experienced Printmakers

For both beginners and those wishing to improve their skills, this course will focus on traditional methods of working copper/zinc plates. Intaglio techniques include a number of rich and varied processes. The class will cover etching, drypoint, aquatint, use of soft and hard grounds, and the combination of techniques on a single plate. Printing techniques will be demonstrated as well as, individualized instruction. A selection of visual resources will be used to introduce style, techniques, and artist. This condensed program will help students become confident with the basic tools and Intaglio techniques.
Class size limited to ten students.

Course Descriptions

Handmade Greeting Cards

Workshop Description: Spend the afternoon making a card for someone special. This hands-on workshop will focus on creating one-of-a-kind cards using a range of collage materials such as paper, buttons, glitter, ribbon and paint etc.

Painting Mixed Media and Collage

Workshop Description: In this course students will create an image with mixed media collage that builds into either a realistic or abstract image. The use of colour and painting techniques are the focus; students will create vibrant and imaginative 2-dimensional works of art. Students will playfully explore an exciting combination of tools and materials while focusing on colour mixing, blending, contrasts and harmonies while learning about the tools associated with tempera, acrylics, watercolor and gouache paints. This fun class provides a perfect art opportunity.

Monoprinting/Monotypes

Workshop Description: Monoprinting is a printing technique whereby a design is drawn onto a flat non-porous surface, also referred to as a printing plate. Paper is laid on top and after pressing, the image from the plate is transferred onto the paper. Monoprinting, as the name suggests, is when you create on unique print (rather than having a plate or a screen with an image which can be reproduced again and again).  There are a number of different ways to make a monoprint, but in this workshop students will learn three different methods of monoprinting while focusing on basic drawing and painting techniques. Students will learn how to use variety of tools and found material e.g. leaf, lace, ribbons, and different textural papers etc. Students will learn how to create a good composition and explore a variety of techniques and mediums that allow for creative expression in a fun and supportive atmosphere.

Learn How to Draw and Paint with Imagination

Workshop Description: In this four- hour workshop students will learn how to depict their ideas and imagination on to the canvas or paper. This workshop will help young artists to explore their talent and creativity while focusing on their choice of medium.

Learn How to Draw and Paint Flowers and Butterflies

Workshop Description: In this workshop students will learn how to paint colourful flowers and butterflies by using different size and shapes of brushes while focusing on colour mixing, blending and collage.

Learn How to Draw and Paint Cars and Wheels

Workshop Description: In this workshop students will learn how to draw and paint cars and wheels while focusing on basic drawing and painting techniques. Students will learn how to use variety of tools e.g. the geometrical shapes. Students will explore a variety of techniques and medium that allow for creative expression in a fun and supportive atmosphere.

Note: Consider the advantages of membership. Members receive a 20% discount on workshop fees.

This year the event is taking place right outside our door! The Walkerville BIA will be closing off Devonshire Road to traffic to accommodate the festival where there will be open air artists’ booths, music and food. Our studio and gallery will be open and we are pleased to be part of this exciting summer neighbourhood event.

Submissions

Members are invited to submit works to display and sell in the gallery. We will be accepting framed, matted or shrink-wrapped work at our studio July 5th, 6th and 7th from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. WPF receives 30% of any work sold.

Our Student show is moved to Art in the Park this year. We are inviting teachers to submit their student’s work. The winning student entries will be exhibited in our booth. If you have not already done so, please bring your student’s work to the office on Wednesday May 26th. between 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. Alternatively, on Wednesday June 2nd between 10 A.M. to 2 P.M.

Some information about Art in the Park.

Art in the Park is held the first full weekend in June of each year, and is the signature event that launches Windsors festival season. This event is one of Ontario’s largest outdoor arts and crafts shows with exhibitors from all over Ontario, Quebec and the state of Michigan. The exhibitors display and retail their wares in booths set up around the 15.5 acres of gated grounds surrounding the beautiful and historic Willistead Mansion in Walkerville (Windsor), Ontario.

The Windsor Printmaker’s Forum is inviting your school to participate in our 2010 Annual Juried Student Exhibit, Prints & Works on Paper. The competition is open to students from St. Clair College and all area high schools in Windsor and Essex County. The call is for work created in the 2009 - 2010 school year.

The Windsor Printmaker’s Forum is pleased to partner with the University of Windsor for the student competition: Dr. Michele Tarailo has kindly offered to serve a juror. Additional jurors will be announced. Awards will be presented.

Students may submit original works on paper created from any media: traditional or experimental. Please see the attached submission form, for details.

The NEW deadline for submissions is: May 26, 2010 at 5:00 P.M. The Winning student’s work will be exhibited at the NEW location of ART IN THE PARK. Our booth number is 112A. Art in the Park takes place on the 15.5 acres of gated grounds surrounding the beautiful and historic Willistead Mansion on 1899 Niagara Street (at Kildare Street) in Walkerville (Windsor), Ontario. in Windsor, ON.

The winning entries of Prints and Works on Paper will run at Art in the Park for the weekend of June 5th and 6th. To encourage all schools to participate Windsor Printmaker’s is waiving exhibition submission fees.

Teachers, please consider enrolling your school as a member of Windsor Printmaker’s Forum. Membership for a school entitles your art students to 3 weeks of exhibition time and also allows up to 5 students to attend workshops, taught by professional artists, at a discounted rate of 10% off. July 10th, 2009 the Ontario Arts Council, in recognition of the merit of the Sense of Place project awarded a National & International Touring Project grant to the Windsor Printmaker’s Forum.

September 9, 2010 the Sense of Place travels to Whitehorse Yukon!

The itinerary continues to develop with plans to travel to the Arctic, East and West Coasts.

November 5, 2009 the Ontario Trillium Foundation approved a grant for the Windsor Printmaker’s Forum to tour the Sense of Place exhibit in Chatham, Sudbury and Thunder Bay. Panel discussions, “the role of place in art and literature” and printmaking workshops conducted by guest artists will be made possible through the grant.

Through the OAC and the Ontario Trillium Foundation the Windsor Printmaker’s Forum and the 30 Sense of Place exhibition artists from across Canada and Michigan have received tremendous exposure via the Provincial and National tour. The Windsor Printmaker’s also gratefully acknowledges the generous spirit of special guests Alistair MacLeod, Iain Baxter& and Nino Ricci for their contributions.
